Globus and SA@OSU

Margaret, Cara, Clara

We need Ryan O. and the devs for this conversation.

Data Curation processes for SA@OSU

Clara talked about datasets and the conversation about how SA@OSU can move forward. 1 conclusion is that researchers appreciate the flexibility of SA@OSU for providing a public face for their dataset. It’s good to have the option.

The way they have been serving the data is through BitTorrent https://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/concern/datasets/vx021m99j?locale=en

Experience of the researcher - have to learn Bit Torrent. Not super ideal. Download may be slow Also, it doesn’t happen very often and then changes need to be made to documentation.

We knew that Globus was a solution used at other institutions. OSU got it a year or so ago. and it would smooth the process for end users to get the data. It will be a much better experience. Would not have to download software to do so (like with BitTorrent). User anywhere in the world could get the content easily with a click

Globus is the data transfer tool. SA@OSU is the curation tool.

Discuss what it would take for LIT to set up Globus to upload datasets in SA@OSU, rather than FTP or current process

Discuss potential need for additional reviewer steps for datasets.

New worktype could be created where it would create a reviewer queue. Some kind of 2 -step review for datasets.

CEAOS has a checklist - Cara’s idea is that for this model, this would be in the submission process.

Corey: Hyrax is built to do this (review queue and checklist) The transfer to the right person (if expanding beyond CEAOS) might be more difficult.

Question Have we seen any of these datasets deleted/disappear before? I know there’s law and regulations about that, but rules and reality are separate beasts. Also fixity, how would we ensure the data doesn’t change w/o storage in Fedora?

Ryan: They also have some weird kind of Compute feature, so we may be able to run automated jobs for data validation. think we could integrate it into the Hyrax fixity system with some work

We still want to define what our upper limit is for database file system
