30min | Surveys and design (still) - Progress with current data (what are people looking for)
- Planning "what do we call this space" surveys
- Sources for design ideas
- books and literature (Seunghae Lee's book recommendations). Homework?
- Field trips
- Other sources for design ideas?
| We are really close to having the libref data analyzed Having a campus map outside in the quad would help with campus directional questions which are well represented in libref data Space name studies - Goal is to identify what terminology patrons are using to identify spaces in the library so that we can better determine language for new signage, space names, and have better keyword search terms for libnav interactive map
- find out how people are communicating how to navigate to spaces (how would you tell your friend how to get here)
- Ask about negative experiences (I was trying to get here but got lost here)
- Put surveys out in study rooms or hand them to patrons as they pick up room keys
- Help from study room intern?
- "Where do i go to take this book home" service point name information studies will be separate
- Whiteboards (can use crummy ones on easels) for next step
- Patrons may be more candid in face to face conversations (takes 10 - 15 minutes for people to feel comfortable talking about negatives
- People navigate by landmarks, find them!
- Have people draw their own maps of the library (Reed Library)
- First step guerilla surveys
- We have lots of candy
- Identify key spaces
- Rotunda
- "Collaboratories"
- "Bull Pen"
- Area outside Willamette rooms
- Map room
- Microfilm room
- One question we ask in person (what do you call this space) and hand out candy (grab a handful!)
- make it quick! Don't want to aggravate survey fatigue
- Leave them with a quarter-sheet single question questionnaire (how would you tell someone where to go to meet you here, what would you say to your friend in a text?)
- Quick 1/2 hour shifts
- Multiple times of day
- Avoid dead and finals week
- Have drop box for the quarter sheets at exit

20min | Electronic signage - ETS is likely going to replace the thin client library catalog computers with kiosks in the avenue on every floor, they will at the very least provide access to the catalog and forthcoming interactive map and we'd like to have some good ideas to take to them before next week
- What is your experience with the current kiosks? (Personal/customer anecdotes etc.)
- Experiences with kiosks in other settings, what did/didn't you like?
- What functionality do you want to see in kiosks? (big opportunity to present library's digital services and promotional items)
- Any ideas or suggestions you might have for kiosks would be helpful!
| What functions would you like to see in library wide electronic kiosks? - Catalog and interactive map are a given, room reservations and promotional items possibly
- Ability to page staff
