Accessibility & You

Or, what Sagan’s job is all about!

In April 2024 the Department of Justice (DOJ) published a final ruling updating Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), with an enforcement act of April 24, 2026. This means all content available online, with very minor exceptions, must be accessible to a specific standard. As a public university, we are covered by Title II.

What needs to be made accessible?

All digital content - articles, ebooks, videos, podcasts, webpages, data sets, presentations, images, social media posts, etc., is included in this ruling.

This also includes content that we subscribe to via journals, databases, and other platforms.

What are the exceptions?

The only exceptions are for items that are fully archived - created before April 24, 2026, used for recordkeeping only, kept in a section clearly marked as archived, and unchanged since it was deposited there.

If any of those points don’t apply, then the item must be made accessible. In addition, all archived material must be made accessible upon request.

What standards are being used?

The DOJ selected WCAG 2.1, Level AA as the written standards.

How does this affect OSULP employees?

Going forward, any material that will be made available online must be made accessible before it can be posted. Training will be coming soon to make this possible!

I have questions!
