Quick Overview

  • Scheduling of future meetings
Autumn
  • Skipped (too few attendees)
30min

Who is going to make these anyway? (Logistics)

  • Who is going to be in charge of what (building manager, committee, LAMP, LG&M)
  • Design: In house vs. external
  • Creating policy (temp sign templates/design guidelines)
  • Creating proposals
  • Getting funding

Beth

Group discussion

  • Unclear as to role of future building managers
  • LEAD has authority over most permanent signage (possibly including space naming)
  • Proposals can be created, Beth will submit on our behalf
  • Initial proposal for changes to permanent signage should include basic design idea and rough cost estimate, designs will be finalized and exact budget made when project is approved
  • Proposal should be short and to the point
  • Proposal should be submitted and we will find the funding after
30min

Surveys! (Ideas we can take to Brooke)

  • What do we want to know?
  • Who do we want to ask
  • What can we do? (Budget/time/ethical constraints)
  • Survey formats (Paper/electronic/verbal/observational)
  • Gathering libanalytics data
  • What do we want to ask peer institutions
  • Researching through published papers?
Group discussion
  • Over-surveying is Very Bad
  • Conducting more surveys should only be done as a last resort
  • We can work with the data we have from libanalytics, concierge, and DHE/Guerilla surveys to find out what questions patrons have and what they are looking to find
  • Beth will consolidate data for us to work with here \\cn-share\Library\Shared\LEAD\LEAD Department\Statistics
  • We have data from Seunghae Lee's research into wayfinding here at the Valley Library to find 'bump points' and other information about how students go about navigating the library, Beth will follow up with her in the hope of getting data that is more accessible for us (current data is mostly raw video footage etc.) and seeing if they would like to work with us
  • I consolidated all the media related to Seunghae Lee's research that I have in the readings box folder (added video presentation link and powerpoint from video presentation)
  • We would like to involve as many OSU students and faculty before consulting outside groups

If we do conduct more surveys

  • Possibly wait until 'survey fatigue' has worn off from our other big current projects in the library
  • Should include few questions (2 - 3)
  • Breakdown by floors (different floors have wildly different functions and resources)
  • Questions should be mapped to specific outcomes
  • We want to know about where signage should be located, signage wording (what do our customers call various library spaces?), what signs should look like (Design)
  • Could put up whiteboards in various spaces (what do you call this space?)
  • 'Guerilla' survey techniques (Answer this question and I'll give you a slice of pizza!)
  • Following users ('ethnographic' research techniques)
  • Have users leave breadcrumbs (bright sticky notes?) as they navigate
  • Geocaching style activities
  • Have people draw their own maps of the library so we can see how they view our space
  • Brown bag lunch get-togethers with staff to share ideas/anecdotes about wayfinding
  • More ideas for studying our users
