Aug. 11, 2022-Disruptive patron

  • Patron was frazzled, made comments about being discriminated against.
  • Multiple interactions with multiple staff members throughout the day.
  • Staff tried to assist her to the best of their ability, including de-escalation.
  • Lucinda did a great job with de-escalation, but it didn't stick later in the day.
  • Patron made racist comments to a student employee that led to a bias report. Student handled it like a champion.

August 16, 2022-Patron distraught by public computers being shut down at closing.

  • Student was nervous about telling the patron.
  • Patron was upset.
  • Erin followed up later. Patron was not aware of how he had come across and was quite apologetic about the whole incident.
  • Erin doesn't believe it will be an issue again.

August 17, 2022-Patron harassment of student employee

  • Patron recognized student at Dutch Bros. and insisted on following her to work.
  • There is a pattern of him following other female student employees in the building.
  • He talks over male student employees to speak to the female student employees and is making our female student employees uncomfortable, perhaps even unsafe.
  • Staff discussed safety strategies with student employees and will be taking over all interactions with this patron so students don't need to interact with him.
  • Encourage students to speak up and ask for help when a patron makes them feel uncomfortable.

August 24, 2022-Patron need to use phone

  • Patron was a student in distress and in need of mental health services.
  • Was handed off to Public Safety.
  • Left student employees a bit shaken.
  • 5 officers responded which felt excessive and potential for escalation rather than de-escalation. Unclear why so many responded.

August 25, 2022-Patron locked out of car, thought purse was stolen

  • Public Safety was called but did not assist because the car was parked off campus.
  • Student had previously been referred to the Basic Needs Center.
  • Patron ended up leaving without assistance.
  • It was unclear about how better to handle that as it was a complicated situation.
  • Derrick suggest 988 might be a better number to call in a situation like this and should make folks more aware of this service.

August 29, 2022

  • Anonymous note left at the Information desk complaining about the pride flag buttons, claiming there was no straight, cis pride flag button and was therefore excluded.
  • Claimed it was a microaggression and there should be sensitivity training and a public apology.
  • Because it was left unsigned, there is no way to follow up with the student.
5 minNear-miss documentation-Follow UpRachel
  • Rachel did some research about documentation. Near-miss reports can be filed with campus for documentation via the HR Advocate Public Incident Reporting Form.
  • They are not required but can be done for documentation if you wish.
  • Accidents must be reported within 24 hours.
  • Important to remember the context of the work we are doing vs. a more industrial setting.
  • Reporting is the responsibility of the supervisor of the employee involved.

Fire Drill

  • Walkie Talkies
Rachel
  • Rachel reached out the EHS for some potential dates for the fire drill and has one scheduled now. Date is not being included in the minute intentionally.
  • Danielle suggested a different date might be better for Ecampus.
  • Please let Rachel know by Friday if you have any conflicts with the date.

Walkie Talkies

  • Considering purchasing some additional walkie talkies to put in staff evacuation areas to increase communication during evacuations and provide better support to LEAD.
  • Need clear protocols about how they would be used and involve LEAD in those conversations.
  • Sagan feels they haven't run out of radios, just working radios.
  • Perhaps having additional radios in LEAD.
  • Rachel is discussing these for in other situations such as earthquakes. Came  up as part of the discussion for the Disaster planning document.
  • Should be discussed more in-depth later.
  • Rachel is considering a LAMP proposal for December.
10 minSafety Week Check InKenna, Karl, Derrick
  • Monday Rachel and Kenna discussed with Public Safety a visit from Cedar.
  • Kenna shared a wiki page with things planned.
  • Has talked to ZAPP, Chem store.
  • Still considering disaster film screening with popcorn.
  • Ham radios may also be discussed.
  • Discussed potential expenses such as permit for outdoor fire extinguisher training, food, and giveaways.
  • Karl, Derrick and Kenna will work on the daily emails that traditionally go out during Safety Week.
10 minIncident DebriefsLucinda
  • Elevator incident email went out in July.
  • Next topic: difficult patron interactions.
    • Two different responses: those who work a service desk and those who do not.
  • Future may be medical emergencies.
  • Lucinda will work with Sagan for input from the service desk side.
5 minSafety Information Share OutsRachel
  • Regular messaging goes out from Rachel about Inclement weather, working with DPS, etc. that tend to be regularly scheduled for timeliness.
  • Rachel would like to get those on the calendar for when they should be sent out.
  • Could add the timing of this to the Safety Council wiki. Information like this was up previously but was outdated and needs to be updated.
