As we are in the thick of summer the Spaces unit is in progress on several projects.
Here is what you can expect to see in the coming weeks prior to term starting:
Compact Shelving
The eastern most portion of compact on 1st floor housing the government documents is scheduled for had replacement of the control panels to updated LED screens and new motors . This work is scheduled for August 22 and will be completed within 2 weeks. Parts will be in August. Parts were harvested to continue servicing the other panels and motors in the building on 1st, 3rd, and 5th. This is a multiyear phased project which we are budgeting for. Next year will be the next section moving westward along the avenue. There is a section at the west end that is already upgrade (2018) if you would like a peek at what to expect from the upgrades. The next section we are hoping to work on is 8 ranges during winter break.
Third Floor Open Study
Use of the new space has been high, students are definitely enjoying the expanded area for studying. A display shelf was added by Ella in the fall.
The shelving was fully cleared out early in the summer. The space was cleaned and re-waxed, and looks bright and ready for students. It is filling up with tables and seating to support open study. There are also some of the new were power towers added to support power needs in the space.
Surplus
Lucinda is working with Surplus on coordinating a massive pick up of shelving, cubicle parts, and broken items throughout the building. Surplus has been understaffed, similar to facilities over the summer which has understandably affected response times. To assist Lucinda is working with crew students to move and load the surplus items for transport to alleviate this.
Maps
The map files for the library brochures, website, and any other needed updated and consistency. Lucinda, Uta, Laura, Rachel, Margaret, and Kenna have been working with Teresa in SMS to create map files that will be singular and located in one place rather than multiple versions in multiple places. The library brochure and library website will reflect these changes with the maps prior to start of fall term.
Library Spaces Calendar
If you ever wonder about an event going on in the library quad, rotunda, or lobby that information can be found on the library.spaces@oregonstate.edu calendar. This inbox is intended to handle space use requests that are non-standard, and not one of the typical reservable classroom spaces.
Autzen Classroom
We are removing the cubicle walls, putting in cord management raceways on the floors, and considering new arrangements within the space. A group consisting of Hannah, Uta, Megan, Dave, and myself are working together with the intent of revisiting the space again after fall term and making further adjustments. The goal is to create a more flexible, versatile space to support multiple needs (student study, instruction, outside groups, and special events to name a few). Autzen is closed for August to allow for these modifications.
LED Lights
With a partnership with Office of Sustainability and Facilities, I was able to secure funding and move on getting the entire building converted to LED Lightbulbs. We were able to do this for floors 2 and 4 last year, this will be all other floors. This will make a huge difference in our energy usage! Not to mention LED bulbs require less upkeep, last longer, put off less heat, and are much less abrasive with regards to flickering and sensory issues. A contractor walkthrough is scheduled for August 11 and this project is slated to be completed prior to start of fall term. The work will involve movement of contractors through the building, use of ladders to access the bulbs but should be minimally disruptive.
Offsite Projects
Currently there is construction on the western/southern facing exterior walls that enclose the library storage at RWB. This work is to seal cracks and reseal joints in the building. The work is expected to be complete prior to fall term start.
Roof Projects and Liebert Unit
The roof project was pushed back an additional year but thankfully the roof seems to be holding up well for now. The ATT project was shifted to next summer. The Liebert unit replacement on the roof which cools the SCARC Archive space is scheduled for late August/early September.
