Food and Drink Machines
The Memorial Union (MU) is in charge of the Valley Library's food and drink vending machines. When handling a situation re: vending machines, please gather the following information:
- Which machine was being used and what happened?
- Did it take the money? If so, what type of payment was used: cash (coins or bills?), credit card, debit card, or Orange Cash?
- Did it dispense the product at all? Did it become stuck? If so, where in the machine?
- Did the machine not provide change?
- Did the machine display any messages?
Once machine is identified, please obtain the service number:
- Pepsi machines are labeled on the inside left-hand side.
- Food machines have service numbers listed on the back (upper back left-hand side).
- If you cannot obtain the service number, please describe its specific location in the building.
Once you gather this information, email it to the MU Information Desk: reserv@oregonstate.edu
The companies that work on the machines will be notified, and can dispense refunds if money has been taken. For in-person visits, the MU Business Office is located inside the MU, up the main inside stairs and to the right. The MU is open weekdays: 8 am-5 pm Monday-Friday.
Refunds
The reimbursement/refund process depends on the type of payment:
Orange Cash, Orange Rewards or UHDS Dining Plans – Patron should go to the ID Center (if the ID Center is closed, go to the MU Info Desk and complete a form)
US Currency (cash) – MU Information Desk
Credit or Debit Cards – File a dispute with the bank who issued the card
For some, disputing charges with the bank is more hassle then it is worth, which is understandable. But the guidelines are put in place to prevent a person from potentially getting reimbursed twice (once by the MU and then again by their bank).
Additionally, some of the vending machines are now equipped with a bar code scanner that scans as the item falls. The theory is, if the snack doesn’t fall, then the barcode does not get scanned and the customer is not charged. So, if a student used a bank card to get a snack or drink, please ask them to check their statement/account and be sure they were actually charged before going through any more hassle.
Learning Commons Supply Vending Machine
This machine will only accept money that has been added to an OSU ID card through an add value machine – no cash, credit or debit cards. Please bear in mind that this does not include money that is in the student's meal plan; that is a separate account system.
For problems with this machine, refer to the Information Desk. During the hours that the Information Desk is closed this duty then shifts to the Circulation desk. The key to the machine is located on the Info Desk key chain (Room 2066) that is hanging in the secure closet.
If the person is purchasing a blue book or a notebook it will invariably get stuck (they're just too wide, period). The key hole is located on the front of the machine on the left hand side. Insert the key, give it a twist, and the "doorbell" like lock will pop out like a little handle. Give that a little twist to so it's horizontal and pull the door open. It is a little tricky at first, but you can see the locking mechanism through the glass which will help to give you an idea of when you have actually unlocked the door. Just give it a good tug. Lock it back up when finished.
